A-Mac-alypse of Life and Hardware
The worst thing happened to me today. Ok, maybe that's a big melodramatic. I didn't die. I didn't lose anyone. But my Mac did break.
Now this is more than just my computer breaking down. I've spent the last few years - more than I care to count - in a rut. I've been really into competitive gaming (yes I know - gaming on a Mac) and sure it's given me a lot of fun. But I'm not satisfied. I don't think this is a sense of entitlement - other than I do feel I'm entitled to be happy.
So I've spoken to my teammates. I've spoken to my friends. And I'm leaving. Actually I'm doing more than just leaving a game. I'm leaving my current life behind. I'm not getting back into gaming - this was a fortuitous event. I might have lost a computer - but I gained a life.
So I'm packing up my old things. In fact I'm slowly starting to pack up my whole flat and sending a lot of it down to Oxfam. I've been lucky over the past few years and through necessity and connections I made during that time I can quite happily work from anywhere in the world.
So I'm going to take off. It might be this weekend, I might be over the next few months. I'd rather wait a while and be sure of what I'm doing rather than just diving in but I don't want to waste this feeling. I want to take advantage of it. I need to take advantage of it.
I've been stuck in a rut and a faulty PSU shook me out of it almost three days ago now. It's left me without a computer but with a burning desire for change. I don't think it's normal to have a mid life crisis when you're 24 but if that's what this is then sign me up. I'm not happy here. And not in a depressed way. In a 'I'm going to make a change' way.
So if (somehow) you're reading this. You're reading the inner thoughts of a guy who's changing his life around. We only have one life to live and I'm going to do something about it.
Now in the practical short term I need to figure out what I'm actually doing. I'm starting to empty out my flat but I am going to need a computer of some kind. I do have an old MacBook here but it's on it's last legs at best. I'm hunting around for an external hard drive I can use (I found some reviews but I'm bad with making choices - I'm thinking maybe this one http://bestexternalharddrivex.com/designed-specifically-for-mac/?). If I back everything up to an external hard drive I can take everything I need with me. I don't really want to use internet storage since I don't know when I'll have a decent enough connection when I go.
Other than that I've already got a proper size travel bag (unused sadly enough) and I'm throwing in some basic clothes etc...
I could actually be gone within the week. It's scary but it's more exciting than I think I have words for at the moment.
